When Rhonda was four years old, we made the decision to take our brood and relocate to California. Our decision to make the move was based on what we felt would be better educational opportunities for our six children and better employment possibilities for my husband. There followed a busy time of preparation for the trip which proved to be easy and pleasant as it was summertime and the children were good travelers. One scary event occurred when we stopped to have a picnic on the Rio Grande river just outside Las Cruces, New Mexico. Dad took the little ones for a walk along the river while Susan helped me set out the lunch for everyone. Soon I heard one big yell from Dad and saw him make a wild leap into the river. Next moment he surfaced holding a very wet and scared Rhonda. She had lost her grip on his hand and slid into the dark water. Thankfully she was none the worse for wear and after she was cuddled and dried and after helping spread out the contents of Dad's wallet, we were able to settle down for a nice meal and rest. |

Rhonda My Sister, My Friend
“Oh, I think he’s pretty!” my first words about my new baby sister. I was almost three years old, and she was just so tiny. I had no idea what an impact this little being would have on my life. My baby sister, I wanted to do everything for her. I wanted to change her diapers, feed and put her down for naps. Of course, I was much too little to do it on my own, but Mom would always let me help. I wonder if our mother could possibly have known how much she was fostering the long-term, loving relationship we share to this day. |

A few years ago, Gregg and I found a new hobby/sport which combines several of our interests into one. We both love hiking and traveling, we enjoy being outdoors, and we're both interested in technology. Geocaching combines all of these and then some into a fun activity which is very family friendly. In this hobby, one uses a hand held GPS (Global Positioning System) to locate pre-determined items (caches) which have been hidden by others, sometimes in the most fascinating places. |

Protect Your Child With a Password |

When we think of password protection, we think of bank accounts, computers, or even voice mail phone systems.
Our children are equally precious to us and need our protection. But how do we protect them?
When my kids were small we established a password, or codeword that only they and I knew. We chose a word very familiar to them, something they could remember, yet not something easily guessed by an outsider.
In the car we would role play many situations that might happen and how my children could respond. It was very important that if anyone other than I was going to pick them up at school or from a sports practice or even a girl scout meeting, this person must know our password. |

One never knows where an accidental conversation will lead. One evening at a social gathering, when I was in college, I was involved in a conversation with a fellow I'd talked to several times before. He wanted to tell me about something, in fact, I can't at all remember what it was. But at the time, it was quite important to him and I was giving the topic my full attention. Try as I might though, I couldn't ignore another conversation going on nearby among a group of men and women. At the center of the discussion was the topic of travel. Soon I became aware of a fellow among that group whose travel interests and desires were very similar to my own. And on top of that, he had a terrific, wry sense of humor. This was Gregg, the man I would one day marry, but I couldn't have known that at the time. |
